Words fall, you type them, and every word you type is filed into the catalogue the game spawns from. Nothing else in the game chooses what comes at you next. You do.
What you clear, it keeps
Type a falling word and it is destroyed, scored, and added to the pool for the rest of the run. The pool draw is weighted by difficulty, so a nasty word does not merely appear again - it appears several times as often as a short one, and the cabinet behind the board fills up with the worst of what you have taught it.
That is why score and survival pull against each other. Value rises steeply with length and with awkward letters, so the words worth real points are exactly the ones you will regret handing over. A run spent clearing easy words stays survivable and scores nothing.
Losing teaches it too
A word that reaches the filing rail costs a life and is filed anyway. The thing that just beat you is now part of the deck, which is how a bad wave turns into a worse one.
The Backspace key is the only way back. It un-files the most recent word and takes back the points that word earned, so it is survival bought with score. You start with three and earn one for every wave you clear without a leak.
The draft prices the poison
Between waves you are offered three words, each with a bonus attached and a plain statement of what it will cost you every wave from now on. Taking the worst word for the biggest bonus is a real decision rather than a free upgrade, and declining costs you nothing but the bonus.
